Silvia Copio

Dedicated social entrepreneur in the field of family education, with a profound interest in promoting Home Education as a Human Right. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. about Human Rights, Family and Education at the Global Studies department at Aberta University, she is a researcher at the Research Center at the same University. Chair of the European Committee at GHEX. Founder of "Descobrimos," a platform providing support and resources for homeschooling families in Portugal and around the world. She carries out events, consulting and training to promote the development of integral education based on co-creation processes between families and learning communities. "Movement for Freedom in Education" (Movimento Educação Livre) member. A pioneering association in Portugal with the mission to defend, promote, develop, and support new education approaches. This movement advocates for parental freedom in choosing their children's education, emphasizes innovation and self-learning educational forms, and strongly supports the freedom to practice homeschooling. She served as chair between 2016 and 2022 and is currently engaged in international affairs, research, and family consulting. She supports and advises several family and associative projects that in Portugal need to guarantee and defend their rights (in direct relationship with the association's lawyer). Representative of the rights of families in home education to administrative, governmental and political circles. She is deeply committed to supporting educational choices. Extensive experience in advocating for families practicing homeschooling in a free and autonomous way in Portugal. Married to Paulo Cópio, mother of three children (ages 17, 19, and 23) who were homeschooled and are now successfully leading autonomous lives. Passionate about bridging support networks and fostering a greater understanding among diverse cultures and individual choices. Believes that advocating for families' educational freedom is a lifelong mission.
